Day 5 Transfer
To the Ketchikan Airport, full of long-lasting memories, for your flight home.
Look closely at a map of Alaska, at the
incredibly complex maze of islands and waterways along the shores of Prince
William Sound and Southeast Alaska's Inside Passage. Let your imagination
wander. What is it like behind this island, or at the end of that fjord?
What's it like to travel through this tiny, winding channel through the
wilderness, or to visit that tucked-away village?
With Cruise West, you can find out. Our seven different
cruise routes range more widely, and more in-depth, than any other line. Our
small ships have the ability, and our Captains the inclination, to truly
explore this glorious wilderness.
Exploration, Not Transportation
Large ships in Alaska, and certainly the public ferries,
tend to stick to the widest channels and the straightest routes, as they
beeline from port to port, often traveling through the night. Cruising with
us, however, you quickly forsake the wider shipping lanes. Rather, you'll
find yourself in channels just a few hundred feet wide, or tying up to an
inner pier in a tiny village's fishing harbor.
Your Captain enjoys exploring these waterways, and
delights in sharing his discoveries. A great many of the waterways you will
see are totally inaccessible to today's large ships. You share them with
local fishermen, and perhaps a few private yachts.
In the small ports we visit, we have nourished excellent
relationships with the local innkeepers, port directors, and local
storytellers. That means that everywhere you travel, you have entrée to the
very best experiences that each community can offer.
Your Exploration Leader
"What's that row of old pilings over there by the
shore?," you query in Endicott Arm. "That was the dock for the
Sumdum Chief Mine, which closed in 1903. They took $500,000 in gold from
that mountain, from over 3,000 feet of tunnels. It's all abandoned
now." A fascinating glimpse of history, now nearly vanished into the
forest.
Throughout your cruise, your on-board Exploration Leader
offers a treasury of information, insights and stories. He or she offers
narration at key points, and evening presentations on Alaska's wildlife,
natural history, and historical events. From the eating habits of humpbacks
to the story of glacier ice, you'll gain a true insider's knowledge of the
Great Land. And with small numbers, you're always able to talk with your
Exploration Leader one-on-one, whenever you wish.
